Master Carlos Gracie

Master Carlos Gracie is considered the Founder of Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ). He studied traditional japanese jiujitsu from Mitsuyo Maeda, a master of his art and known in Brazil as Cone Koma, the Count of Combat. He taught all of his four brothers the foundations that Maeda taught him, and interpreted the moves to emulate a street fight with no rules. They went on to develop ‘Gracie Jiujitsu’. He adopted a philosophy of always being ready to fight and was known to put advertisements in newspapers encouraging others to come to his home to test his fighting skills. It was this confidence in training and desire to share his knowledge with his family that birthed the sport we have come to know. Carlos Gracie also created ‘The Gracie Diet’ to help his family live a healthier lifestyle, keeping the blood pH low by only consuming compatible nutrients. Carlos Gracie went on to have 21 children - 13 became black belts. By the time he died, he had 106 grandchildren. His younger brother Helio had 7 sons. They all embodied this open approach to the sport, encouraging challengers at any time. This built the ‘Gracie’ name and started the legacy we have all come to know over the decades since.

He believed in sharing his BJJ knowledge, seeing that as a fundamental way to move the sport forward and improve.  Both his BJJ and MMA career had him as one of the most feared competitors, he created an aggressive approach to the sport with heavy top pressure and infused Judo and Wrestling. Over his lifetime he became a 9th degree red belt.
