The Transformative Advantages of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
If you’ve been searching for an engaging activity that builds confidence, discipline, and strength while helping you or your kids develop important life skills, then Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) might be the answer you didn’t know you were looking for. Known as "the gentle art," Jiu Jitsu is so much more than just a martial art or sport. It’s a powerful tool for personal transformation.
Whether you’re a parent looking for a way to boost your child’s confidence or a teen ready to tackle challenges and grow, here’s why you should consider stepping onto the mats.
1. Self-Confidence That Lasts Beyond the Mats
One of the most significant benefits of Jiu Jitsu is the confidence it inspires. By practicing techniques and overcoming challenges in a supportive environment, kids and teens alike learn that they’re capable of achieving difficult goals. This newfound confidence doesn’t just stay in the gym; it carries over into school, social situations, and beyond.
2. Building Discipline and Resilience
BJJ teaches discipline through consistent practice and dedication. It’s not about instant results but rather the long-term commitment to improvement. Along the way, practitioners learn resilience as they face and overcome obstacles on the mats. These lessons translate into a greater ability to handle the ups and downs of life.
3. Strength, Stamina, and Weight Management
Jiu Jitsu is a fantastic full-body workout that builds strength, increases stamina, and burns calories in a fun and engaging way. Your kids won’t even realize they’re breaking a sweat as they learn new techniques and spar with their peers. The physical benefits are undeniable and contribute to a healthier, more active lifestyle.
4. Real-Life Self-Defense Skills
Unlike other sports, Jiu Jitsu emphasizes realistic self-defense techniques. It doesn’t matter how big or small someone is; BJJ teaches students how to use leverage and body mechanics to protect themselves. For parents, it’s comforting to know that your child is learning practical skills that can help keep them safe.
5. A Sense of Empowerment and Community
Stepping onto the mats can seem intimidating at first, but BJJ fosters an inclusive and encouraging environment. From the moment you or your child join, you become part of a close-knit community that supports one another’s growth. This sense of belonging empowers students, showing them that with teamwork and determination, they can achieve great things.
I always wanted to try Jiu Jitsu as it is quite popular and originated where I come from, in Brasil, Charles Oliveira Jiu Jitsu game in the UFC also motivated me as he is my favourite fighter, but never took the initiative and actually went to train. In March 2024 I had just turned 14 and was quite fat and did not have any goal or determination in life, my usual routine was just going to school, then going straight home after school and playing video games and eating unhealthy food, I didn’t really have a purpose or something to go for or fight for. I decided to try Jiu Jitsu for the first time at Djago, with the intention of primarily losing weight and having a better lifestyle, I immediately fell in love with it and started training a lot ever since my first weeks, it gave me something to fight for and push myself in. Shortly after I started training I knew I wanted to do this for life and seeing famous Jiu Jitsu guys that started training at a young age also and dedicated their whole life to this sport really inspired me, like Charles Oliveira, Mica Galvao and other athletes. I started really dedicating myself to training and just trying to learn and spend as much time on the mats as possible, until now I am still determined and dedicating myself to this. Jiu Jitsu really changed my life as it taught me to always be humble and respectful, stay calm under extreme pressure and have patience, also helped me develop self-defence and fitness. I don’t think about Jiu Jitsu as a physical fight, when I am rolling or sparring it's more like just a sport as it is very complex and hard, so when I am practicing it is like a game and a art where you have to think and use your knowledge or technique, not a fight where you are just trying to beat your training partner or opponent.Overall Jiu Jitsu has changed my life a lot in a positive way, I hope to just keep on training and getting better with no major injuries, and I am very grateful to all my coaches and training partners at Djago, who help me and push me everyday.
