How we teach

black logo

No experience required

Everyone starts Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) knowing nothing so don’t worry about not knowing what you’re doing - that’s how we all began! There are very few transferable skills, so everyone starts their journey at the space place, ground zero. We call BJJ the great equaliser as the only thing that matters is how much time you spend on the mats.

Fundamental Movements

We don’t believe in fancy moves you see on Youtube. Our BJJ is simple and highly effective. There’s no such thing as a “black belt move” simply, a black belt level of detail in any given position. You just need to understand the basic principles of movement in BJJ and the way your body is connected.

Community

We are a BJJ academy and our team only gets stronger the more we help each other’s journey. Training improves as the skill set of your training partners challenges you, improving your game. We are here to help one another.

Goal oriented

BJJ is structured with a belt and stripe system so there is always something to work towards. Additionally we structure our curriculum in a way that focuses on a different principle each month, giving you a chance to fine tune details and see how much you learn.

I’m not very fit, is it okay for me to do BJJ?

BJJ is great for women. It can feel overwhelming to begin with especially as it is a close contact sport. However, as the novelty factor wears off and you develop more technical skills, you start to see your body as a tool and the progress in BJJ becomes addictive.

Safety is our first priority for everyone at D’jago. Our instructors are always careful in partnering you with someone at the same level as you, or an experienced practitioner who can support you.

Yes! BJJ can be exhausting, however you do not always have to spar. The majority of our class is educational, reviewing technique and understanding positions. In each class there will be a technique of the day followed by the counter to that technique. After that you will spend time drilling the positions. All of that is very manageable for every fitness level and as you progress, you can join in more of the sparring segment of the class.

What can I expect from my first BJJ class?

Every class we run can be attended by someone who has never done BJJ before. At D’jago we don’t believe in fancy moves, we focus on understanding the philosophies and fundamental techniques on which the sport is built on.

We start with a warm-up, followed by the technique of the day, then working with your partner you will work the position, testing different actions and reactions. In the All-Level class, there will also be sparring. In the Beginners class there is no sparring.

How safe is BJJ?

Safety is our top priority at D’jago. Although we are a contact sport, there are systems in place in a BJJ class that ensure everyone’s safety. Unlike other martial arts, BJJ uses the safeguard of the ‘tap’. This means when you are in a compromised position, you tap and the round is over. Unlike boxing where you finish only when the time is up in the round.
